]]>After some delays due to recent issues we are pleased to announce RetroPie 4.5.
This version does NOT work on the recently released Raspberry Pi 4. We are currently working on support for this.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: It has come to our attention that composite out is broken on this release. See https://retropie.org.uk/2019/07/composite-out-broken-on-retropie-4-5/ for further details.
RetroPie 4.5 for the Raspberry Pi is based on Raspbian Stretch. This may be our last image based on Stretch as it looks as though the Raspberry Pi foundation are now concentrating their efforts on the recently released Raspbian Buster. Some parts of RetroPie already work on Buster on the Raspberry Pi 1/2 and 3 but it’s not officially supported yet.
We held off on making this release due to a Raspbian kernel update which broke pairing of Sony Bluetooth devices. We have worked around this on the Raspberry Pi images by installing more recent firmware/kernel packages from the Buster distribution.
Please see the changelog below for more information on the changes since RetroPie 4.4.
You can download a 4.5 image from https://retropie.org.uk/download/. For first installs please follow the Installation Instructions.
You can also install RetroPie on top of an existing Raspbian Stretch set up, or on top of Ubuntu on a PC/Odroid-C1/C2/XU3/XU4. Links to the relevant instructions can be found on the Download area.
If you want to support the project, donations are always appreciated and can be made on our Donation Page. The main developer Jools Wills also has a Patreon page up at https://www.patreon.com/retropie.

]]>Highlights of this release include (full changelog below) :
You can download a 4.0 image from: https://retropie.org.uk/download/. If updating from a previous version you should make a backup first, update the RetroPie-Setup script, then choose Update all installed packages.
Installation Instructions can be found at https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/First-Installation. Users of RetroPie v3.x can upgrade to the latest version by following the upgrade instructions on the Wiki.
You can also install RetroPie on top of an existing Raspbian set up, or on top of Ubuntu on a PC/Odroid-C1. Links to the relevant instructions can be found on the Download area.
NOTE: Some people have been having trouble with the XBox/XBox 360 controller driver xboxdrv on the current Raspbian Kernel. To work around this we now include the latest xpad kernel driver with the image (it is available from the Packages -> Drivers menu for those upgrading). The included xpad has been patched to map the Xbox 360 triggers to buttons, so they work out of the box with Emulation Station, without the need for xboxdrv.
Big thanks to everyone who has contributed to this release. Thanks also to our excellent web hosts Mythic-Beasts who are sponsoring us with our hosting. The performance and connection speed is great. We highly recommend them if you need a decent hosting solution backed by expert support.

]]>I am one of the main developers working on RetroPie and work alongside other contributors, who help with the code, graphics, documentation, and tutorials. The project also has a very helpful user base helping out over at the RetroPie forum, as well as contributing to the Documentation.
The main code for RetroPie can be found on GitHub – https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup
On October 30th 2012, Pimoroni launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Picade – a small table top arcade cabinet for a Raspberry Pi (or other small computer/board). In June 2014 I received my Picade and installed a Raspberry Pi in it. I had previously looked around at available software and had come across the RetroPie project, which was an automated set of scripts to pull together an easy to use emulation system on top of Raspbian.
Although decent at the time, it lacked some features I wanted, and I had some ideas for improvements. I started contributing in July 2014, and have been actively working on it since then. A list of changes/new features can be found in the RetroPie docs – https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Changelogs/

]]>The post XBMC4Xbox – Media player software appeared first on jwills.co.uk.
]]>XBMC4Xbox (which was the original part of the XBMC project – now known as Kodi – and formerly named Xbox Media Center) is a free and open source media player software made solely for the first-generation Xbox video-game console. Other than the audio / video playback and media center functionality of XBMC4Xbox, it also has the ability to catalog and launch original Xbox games, and homebrew applications such as console emulators from the Xbox’s built-in harddrive.
XBMC4Xbox is a third-party developer spin-off project of XBMC for Xbox, with still active development and support of the Xbox. This project was created as a fork of XBMC for Xbox as a separate project to continue having a version of XBMC for the Xbox hardware platform, and was initially started by a few members from the original XBMC project in order to fully breakout the removed Xbox branch support from the official XBMC project and let it continue as a totally separate project, which was announced on the 27 of May 2010.
I currently maintain the code base, and run the XBMC4Xbox website and forum over at http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/. In October 2014 we released v3.5 with a v3.5.1 with a few fixes being released on the 31st May 2015.
These days there are lots of low-cost options for running Kodi (formerly XBMC) such as the Raspberry Pi, but XBMC4Xbox is still used by people, and there are still a few thousand XBMC4Xbox machines connected to the net (taken from the newsfeed stats) and perhaps more being used as standalone units. For SD content the XBMC4Xbox still makes a decent player and the hardware can be picked up cheaply. The original Xbox can also be used for emulation, and of course for playing Xbox games
Back in 2009/2010 I started looking at a few issues with XBMC on the original Xbox. At that point the Xbox version of the project was not being actively maintained by the main team, but one user called Arnova was still backporting patches and looking after it. The project officially split from the main XBMC project in May 2010, renamed to XBMC4Xbox to distinguish itself from upstream and I joined up to work on improving the player code.
At that time there was a 3rd party forum set up by someone which we decided to use to communicate with the userbase, but unfortunately it was not maintained well, and one day just disappeared from the Internet.
On July 12th 2012, I launched a new website for the project. We were able to recover some of the blog content, and the wiki was rebuilt from the official XBMC wiki – with much thanks to Team XBMC at the time for providing us with dumps. At this point in time Arnova had moved on, and was working mostly on the official XBMC project, so I took over as the core developer and continued development.

]]>Python support in XBMC4Xbox has been overhauled, with the out of date Python 2.4 replaced with Python 2.7. This update, along with the addition of some missing API functions brings much better compatibility with Kodi (Formerly XBMC) plugins. The Addons4Xbox installer has also been updated, allowing many plugins written for Kodi to work right out of the box. The Python 2.7 update also brings performance improvements, and comes with fully working libraries for sqlite3, and SSL amongst others.
DVDPlayer (The main video player in XBMC4Xbox) has received numerous changes, including having the FFMpeg core libraries updated to v1.2.8 which brings a variety of new codecs, bug-fixes, and optimisations from the previous 0.10.x version. The libraries used for DVD navigation have also been updated which should bring better compatibility with problematic DVD menus.
We had a lot of broken and unmaintained scrapers with the previously version of XBMC4Xbox. With the 3.5 release only a few are included, but they are all maintained and working. We have scrapers for themoviedb.org, thetvdb.com as well as theaudiodb.com for music. Please do support and contribute to these open database projects, as the content and results are only as good as the information people have contributed.
PAPlayer (the core audio player in XBMC4Xbox) has received some updates since the last version of XBMC4Xbox. DVDPlayer’s FFMpeg libraries are now used for decoding of some audio formats which means some of the old out of date libraries we used previously are no longer needed. This simplifies maintenance, and brings with it better performance and compatibility. The FFMpeg libraries are now used for OGG, FLAC, AAC, AC3,and DTS.
A variety of improvements have been backported from Kodi for the skin engine. This allows skins and features for Kodi to be more easily implemented. Thanks to the skin developers who requested changes/features and helped with testing. We currently ship with the same selection of skins as with v3.3 – Confluence Lite, Confluence, Project Mayhem III, and the PM3HD skin, but more can be found on the skin development section of our forum (such as the excellent Xbox Extended skin from Dom).
Thanks to SwedishGojira we now have our own project branding – our new XBMC4Xbox logo is used on our project site as well as for the XBMC4Xbox boot-up splash. Since the renaming of XBMC to Kodi, there has been some discussion regarding our name. I can confirm we are keeping the name XBMC4Xbox for our project. Changing it now would just introduce more confusion.
Thanks to Kodi and their useful tools for handling translations, we are now using the on-line service Transifex to manage translations for the project. This means anyone who wants to help improve translations can now go and sign up over at https://www.transifex.com/organization/xbmc4xbox and start translating the software to their favourite language via the easy to use web interface. The updated translations can then be merged back into the XBMC4Xbox code base by us.
There have been many bug fixes around the software with around 44 issues on the bugtracker resolved/fixed as well as more reported via the forum. Thanks to all those that have reported bugs, provided fixes & patches, and helped with testing.
As well as the key features above, many other changes have been made with a lot of backported features and fixes from Kodi. Thanks to Team Kodi for creating our favourite media center software Thanks also to all those who help and contribute to our project and forum.
If you enjoy using XBMC4Xbox and want to show your support for the ongoing development please consider making a donation to the project. Please also do join in the discussions over at our Forum.

]]>Changes since 3.5 RC1 include:
More changes have been included than we expected after the initial release candidate. This is due to some updates that were planned before, but got overlooked, as well as some fixes for problems reported by users. Thanks to everyone who tested 3.5 RC1 and reported back to us. In addition our PolarSSL was rather out of date, so it made sense to rebuild librtmp and libcurl against a newer version (and update them in the process) . Thanks to Sean for reminding me to pull in the Transifex translation updates.
We finally have a new branding/logo design – massive thanks to SwedishGojira for his work on this. The logo is already being used on this site, but you can also find it on the new XBMC4Xbox splash screen. Hope you like it – we do!

Our mirror is now up to date again after Modland moved home, and some changes have been made to the web interface we offer for it, including switching to XMP for playback of some of the multichannel module formats. With this change some additional (mostly PC) tracker formats can now be streamed as ogg/mp3 including – Digibooster Pro, Digitrakker, Epic Megagames MASI, Farandole Composer, Graoumf Tracker, Imago Orpheus, Liquid Tracker, Multitracker, Octalyser, Polytracker, TCB Tracker, Ultratracker and X-Tracker. Note the support and accuracy of this can vary between tracker – further information regarding XMP can be found at http://xmp.sourceforge.net/. These changes also affect the XBMC frontend – http://addons.xbmc.org/show/plugin.audio.modland/ – which allows streaming of tunes from Modland direct to your HTPC. The Modland addon for XBMC is available from the official XBMC Repository.
UnExoticA had a small update back in January with the addition of the music from two recent Amiga games – Solid Gold and Putty Squad. Thanks to Codetapper for providing these rips.
Finally I would like to thank Ronaldvd for his many contributions to the wiki over the past couple of years, including important corrections, structural cleanups and improvements. You have made a massive difference, and your help is always appreciated. Cheers :)
