Xubuntu for the O2 Joggler updated to v1.6

The O2 Joggler images of Xubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu Base have been updated to v1.6.

As well as Kernel and package roll-ups, this update now has OpenSSH enabled on the Xubuntu image (requested by users for easier access, as the Joggler only has a single external USB port). Make sure you change the default joggler password for security.

The f2fs image has now been dropped. The included 3.2.x backport of f2fs is very old, and last the f2fs image didn’t work – probably due to newer f2fs features that need disabling when creating the image.

Changes:

  • Kernel 3.2.84
  • Package Rollups
  • OpenSSH enabled on the Xubuntu image

Kernel/Package updates

All currently maintained images have been updated to kernel 3.2.63 as well as having all packages updated. XBMC 13.2 has been added to the Joggler repository, and is included in the updates. Currently the squeezeplay installer script isn’t working, but hopefully this will be fixed soon by the maintainer. As the script is downloaded – it can be sorted later without needing to change anything in the builds.

Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and Ubuntu 14.04 Base/Server images

New images are now available for Xubuntu 14.04 LTS as well as a 14.04 ubuntu base/server image. The Linux Mint 13 and 12.04 images have also been updated with package rollups, and kernel 3.2.58. The Ubuntu 12.04 image with Unity 2D has been dropped. It never worked very well on the Joggler anyway. The new and updated images also include XBMC Gotham 13.1b2. As soon as the 13.1 final is out it will be made available to download, but the 13.1 beta is running stable.

All the images are now also available using the F2FS filesystem which is a relatively new flash friendly filesystem. I’ve given it limited testing, so if trying it please do feedback your thoughts over at the Joggler Forum. Note also that the F2FS images are twice the size as the other images due to the way it handles free space and the method we use to construct the images.

Kernel/Package Rollups

Current images have been updated with kernel 3.2.53 as well as having all the distribution package rollups applied. There is also an improvement to the eth0 MAC address script which was not working correctly on the btrfs images before (I recommend using the EXT4 images anyway as most people seem to have better performance and reliability from them). The latest images include XBMC 12.3. When XBMC 13 is ready, it will be added to the repositories for those that want to upgrade.

You may have noticed I did not release a Xubuntu 13.04 or 13.10. I lack the time to work on new releases every 6 months, especially considering the number of distros being managed here. From now on I will concentrate on the LTS releases only. This update to Joli OS will be the last, as http://www.jolicloud.com is no longer maintaining it as they are concentrating on their web/cloud based interface to social media. From now on I will concentrate on Xubuntu, the Ubuntu Base image, and may also do a Linux Mint LTS release later this year if there is demand.

XBMC 12.1 and Package Rollups

All the currently maintained images have been updated with the latest distro package updates. Includes XBMC 12.1. XBMC is on the joggler repository, so anyone running the previous release can install it also. This update was mostly done so people don’t have to update lots of packages after running. XBMC skin was changed back to Xeebo due to the previous re-touched skin not getting any updates / support for the most recent Frodo features.

EMGD 1.16 and Package Rollups

All the images have been updated with the latest EMGD 1.16 graphics driver as well as a path fix for a repository that moved. All the latest distribution package updates have also been applied.

Also worth noting new XBMC builds are available for those that want to test the new upcoming release XBMC 12 (Frodo). See this forum post for details.
